Same old mistake

In my previous post I forgot to include a direct link to the video I embedded. For the people that subscribe to my blog with my email update from feedblitz or read my blog in an RSS Aggregator that don’t support that kind of object embed they won’t have a quick way to get to the Blendtec iPod video. So here it is: direct link to “Will it blend? – iPod”

…and a bonus link to “Will it blend? – Glowsticks”

Last but not least: is this really a problem? I can see that I now have close to 800 people subscribing to my feed. You are among my most valuable readers and I want to treat you well. NewsGator and GoogleReader support embedded video in the feed, but what about the other readers?

A new gadget and a promise

Marius Arnesen Long exposure London

Yes, I have returned from the Future of Web Apps conference. And I will post an article with some impressions.

And I have invested in a new gadget. Let’s see if you can guess what it is. It’s not me in that image, but I shot it. And in theory you find the answer in the exif data of the image.

And the person in the image? No other than Mr. HappyGoLucky himself.

Update:
You find the image that Mr. HappyGoLucky is shooting here.

Upgrade of eirikso.com

I just upgraded my blog to the latest version of my publishing system: WordPress 2.1

If you experience trouble please post a comment. I will do some additional adjustments, so be patient if the site acts funny for the next couple of days.

And yes, I know. The nice tag cloud that I had in my sidebar just turned into a very long list of categories. I’ll try to fix it.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year
No posting for over a week! Indicating that I have had a very nice Christmas. With family, friends, good food, good wine and nice presents. One of them is of course the 17″ iMac from eirikso to eirikso… More on that later.

The image is a two second (hand held) exposure from outside our flat at new years eve.

Look forward to loads of interesting stuff here at eirikso.com in 2007.

Happy New Year!

Happy christmas

Christmas
God jul. Joyeux Noel. Buone Feste Natalizie. Selamat Hari Natal. Boze Narodzenie. Yes, I am repeating myself.

Well, the internet is about to go into hibernation mode for the holidays. Have fun. Take care of yourself. Take care of your family. I’ll do my best, so expect slow posting for the next couple of days. πŸ™‚

Preview removed …and a recommended plugin

My experiment with Snap Preview lasted for four days. I agree with the comments back on the original post. This is functionallity that belongs to the browser. And on recommendation from Onno I have installed Cooliris. A plugin for Firefox, Safari and Explorer that I now can recommend as well. It gives you a quick preview for links in a popup window. If you like what you see you can quickly transfer that page to a new tab.

You get a small blue square besides the links. When you mouse over the square a popup will show the page. I have made a quick screen recording to show how it works.

Link to video.

The screen recording was made with the free and open source tool called CamStudio. Currently windows only, but if you’re on Mac or Linux you can find different tools for screen recording in this list in Wikipedia.

Eirikso.com by the numbers

Inspired by Brilliantdays I give you the eirikso traffic list. It shows the sites that have given me the largest amount of traffic over the last year. I have removed the search engines.

These are the 42 top sites that have directed traffic to eirikso.com in this period. Most hits from digg.com and so on…

Lots of very interesting sites here. Thanks to all the people in this list and to all the other ones that have linked to this site! My site gets 18% of the traffic from direct hits, 69% from referrers and 13% from searches.

And Oyvind, you know that number 42 is the best place to be…  πŸ™‚

And what are people searching for when they find my site? These are the top 20 searches:

  • WebShots
  • dvr-ms
  • media center software
  • quicktime without itunes
  • HTPC frontend
  • converting dvr-ms
  • HTPC software
  • converting dvr-ms files
  • mce software
  • free media center software
  • slimserver
  • program mce remote
  • htpc mediacenter software
  • apple media center
  • How to build a cabinet
  • htpc front end
  • media centre software
  • mce browser
  • play 3gp

And how many people visit this blog each month? So far in September 24,963 people have been here. And here are the total number of visitors for the last five months:

Aug – 31,648
Jul – 29,395
Jun – 46,967
May – 53,356
Apr – 40,226

…I lost a considerable amount of hits in this count the last time I was on the front page of digg (in July). My site went down and most of the traffic went to a mirrored page that didn’t include the counter. However, you can see the impact of digg in Alexa. Quite a bit of traffic and it would have been a lot more if my site had stayed up. Digg eventually had to remove the link from the front page.

And how much money do I make from the Google Ads on the site? According to the AdSense contract I am not allowed to tell you, but a quick estimate tells me that if I keep the growth I have now I can quit my day job in about 50 years. πŸ™‚

So why bother with the ads? I learn a lot, it pays for the hosting and and when adding up a couple of months of AdSense cash I can afford an occasional upgrade of my computers.

Last but not least, thanks to all my readers. To the people commenting and contacting me about stuff they find here. Keep it up.

I’ll keep on posting interesting, amazing, fun, boring, stupid, difficult and strange articles… A couple of them each week. Have fun and don’t forget all the cool stuff that’s already in here.

Keeping an eye on your website

My hosting company have had some stability issues lately, so eirikso.com and all my other sites have been down a couple of times.

To get an exact idea of how big the problem is I started checking out a couple of services that can monitor your web site and alert you by mail if it is down.

I found several solutions. Here are the two that I am currently testing:

Montastic. Completely free. Lets you add up to 100 web sites to monitor. You get an email if one of them goes down. You can also subscribe to an RSS feed with status information.

SiteUptime. Free for keeping an eye on one site every 30 minutes. Gives you an email if it is down. Stores some data and details so you can keep an eye on the total uptime. Commercial version available with more functions.

Do you have any other suggestions? I have a couple of servers running 24/7 at home as well. Is there a simple application that I can install on my computer that will check on a web site at regular intervals?
