One gadget to change an industry

I agree with Vincent Laforet. This camera is a game changer:

1. The 5D MKII camera produces the best stills in low light that I’ve ever seen – what you can see with you eye in the worst light (such as sodium-vapor street lights at 3 a.m. in Brooklyn) – this camera can capture.

2. It produces the best video in low light that I’ve ever seen – at 1080p. A top commercial film editor who who regularly edits RED camera footage – and has seen the raw footage from the 5D MKII – says the 5D MKII is “far superior to the RED camera” in terms of low light performance…

Check out the images in his article. They’re taken from the video he produced with the camera.

We published a short article on NRKbeta with our results after having a look at a video clip from the camera earlier this week. And a norwegian article with some images and a video showing the camera.

  1. So you can record videos with it as well? That’s pretty cool. I’ve been wanting to get my hands on it for a quite a while now, but considering I’m not a professional photgrapher my 400d does the job.

What an awesome camera that is! I bet the quality of video it can produce is shockingly good, would really like to have that one =)

  3. What about audio ? Can the Canon 5D MKII record decent audio ? Is there a possibility to connect an external mic ? If yes, what type of connector: XLR ? Din jack ?

  4. I have ordered one and expect it to arrive any day now 🙂 Any suggestion for suitable lences? The only lence from my Canon 350D that I can use with the 5D is a great Sigma 105mm macro.

I am also curious about the video recording. Is the 1080 30p the only option. What I really would like to see is the 50p option, like 720p50, but I guess that’s not possible?

  5. At this point it is 1080 30p only. But we all hope Canon will be able to add more frame rates through a firmware update.

    Currently I’m also evaluating lenses. I have a 70-200 f4 L IS USM and a 50mm f1.4 USM that I can use on the 5D. My 17-55 and 10-22 are EF-S lenses and won’t work.

    Right now I’m considering these:
    24 mm f1.4L USM II
    100 mm f2.8 macro
    135 mm f2L USM
    80 mm f1.8 USM

I also know that the 16-35 f2.8 L II is regarded a very goos zoom on the 5D.

I really like the utterly sharp very fast prime lenses. And I think the 24 f1.4, 50 f1.4 and the 100 f2.8 Macro might be a very flexible solution. Time will show. I’m currently borrowing the 24 and the 100 mm macro to test them.

  6. And one more thing:
The 21 megapixel full frame 5D Mark II is very picky on it’s lenses. We’re talking very high resolution and a big sensor. I would buy as high quality optics as possible…
