I made one of these two years ago, but I need one more. Of course I didn’t find my original drawing and had to use the old one as a basis for my measures. Now I am posting this here for future reference.

2 wooden plates of 40 x 40 cm
2 wooden plates of 60 x 40 cm
8 angle backets
I used two plates of 120 x 40 cm. One cut in two parts and one cut in three parts.

I’m using Bloglines as my RSS reader. I like the fact that it is independent of the computer I use and that it lets me keep a list of clips and a blog of links that I can follow up later.
Today when I tried to access it the site was down for maintenance. Bloglines seem to have systems that let them maintain and keep the service running without having to take it down often, but today they apparently had to take it down for a short while.
What kind of message they give to their users while the system is down is an important part of their communication with their users. And I admit it. I am used to such horrible messages of “Error-whatever-please-come-back-later” that I actually get charmed by messages like this one:
Hi,
I’m the Bloglines Plumber. Bloglines is down for a little fixer upper. We will be back shortly. Bloglines will be all better when I’m done with it.

The result of such a communication? Well, the downtime doesn’t bother me at all. Simple as that.
Most of the pictures in this blog are thumbnails with a bigger version of the picture behind it. If you click the picture it will simply open the large version in a blank page.
There is a nice java script based plugin for WordPress that gives a bit of extra functionallity for pictures. When you click a thumbnail the bigger version will open on top of the same page with the rest of the page “dimmed”.
The question is: what do you think?

I have now posted all the original pictures that I used to make my little time lapse experiment.
Who knows? There might be more creative ways to utilize 46 pictures of the same frame taken over one whole year…?
The pictures I have posted are the ones that I have adjusted to show the exact same framing. Unfortunately I lost the EXIF-information while editing the pictures in Photoshop. I used layers and didn’t plan my work good enough. All the pictures ended up with the EXIF info from picture number one…
If there’s any interest I can post the original files from the camera as well. They’re not perfectly adjusted, but have the original EXIF-info. In other words, they are stamped with the exact time and date taken.
For the people that want to make flash animations, print outs, web sites and whatever, here are the links:

This experiment was a manual, “poor mans” time-lapse. Time to do something more advanced.
Time for a true time-lapse. I now have a Canon PowerShot S50 that I can play with. I can mount it in a window and connect it to a computer. Through such a set-up I can program the camera to snap a picture every hour for one whole year. I also have a couple of potential locations with a more interesting view than my own. (More than 100 000 people have seen the view from my living room anyway! My last experiment was popular way beyond expectations…)
A camera, a computer and a nice view is not enough. That’s where you come in. The utterly intelligent readers of eirikso.com. These are my main questions:
1. Software
There are several programs that can control the S50. I have found these:
– Canon’s own remote capture
– Cam4You Remote
– PSRemote
– inPhoto Canon Camera Control Software
Do you have any experience with any of these? Can you recommend other software? I have a dedicated computer for this project, so I can choose to run Linux if that helps…
2. Timing
Every hour for one year? Every half hour? etc… At some point I have to be able to discard the pictures that are taken during dark hours. In Norway this vary a lot. There are two possible solutions:
a) A table that controls the software so that it only takes pictures when the sun’s up
b) Software to extract only the pictures with a certain level of light during post production
All good advice appreciated! Preferably through comments on this post, but also through mail.

To celebrate the fact that my excellent web host just octupled my bandwidth and quadrupled my disk space I give you the HD-version of my time-lapse experiment for download. I am currently travelling and on a dial-up connection only. Uploading the 120 MB through modem was painful. And that’s why I have to wait until I return back home before I can upload additional versions.

I am honored by the huge interest for my little video experiment with pictures from 2005. Huge amounts of nice comments and suggestions. One of the suggestions was to make a version of the index print with a higher resolution. That was actually quite easy. I used a cheap little publishing software called PagePlus. It has a photo merge function and repeating fields for pages. I have made two versions.
Right-click and select “download” if you don’t want the PDF to open in your browser:

A3, 6 x 6 pictures, 400 DPI
If you print this, use it somwhere or have any other ideas – please comment.
I will post back here when I have uploaded the HD-version of the video and all the original pictures so all you creative people out there can do other experiments as well.

44 pictures taken out of our window at random times of the day and at random intervals through the year. When taking the pictures I have placed the camera up in the corner of our living room window at a place where it gets nearly the same framing for each picture. Because it’s only nearly I aligned all of them in Photoshop. Then I put them on the timeline in Sony Vegas Video. I strethced them to 5 seconds each and added a simple dissolve between all the pictures.
To align them in Photoshop you start with picture number one, put the next one on a layer above and makes it 50% transparent. Then you find a place in the picture that is as solid as possible and align the two pictures until you don’t have any “ghost image” around the solid parts.
Click the pictures to see the original screenshot from Photoshop. The first one (to the left) is not aligned. The last one (right) is aligned.

Been there, bought the T-shirt.
I’m still in Florida. What should I say? I can see the power cord. I most definitely have to go back here during the evening and check out what kind of aestetic delight the creators of this snowman manage to get out of it when they combine it with a couple of good watts from the local power plant.
No matter what. It can’t come anywhere close to this classic.
For the last year I have been taking a picture out of our living room window at random intervals. I have found a place in the window where the framing is almost identical for each picture. My plan is of course to edit this into a short video that will morph through the year.
While working on it I made this index overview. Even that one looks quite nice. It starts with a picture taken in the beginning of January 2005 top left and ends up with a picture taken december 2005 down to the right.
